01 · THE DISCONNECT

Two problems that solve each other.

Younger students struggle to engage with reading — the early skill that shapes everything after — and they read more when a story feels personal. Meanwhile high-schoolers write assignments that feel detached, for an audience of one, when writing improves most for a real reader.

Two problems — and each one is the other's answer.

02 · THE BRIDGE

One platform, three roles, one rule.

High-schoolers author, K-8 students read, and teachers and admins oversee what gets published. Four systems make the bridge work — a weekly prompt, tag & browse, reading-level adaptation, and content moderation.

The rule that keeps it honest: AI adapts the reading level, it never rewrites the story. The author's original is always preserved — a younger reader just picks a level.

And the ideation stage was the reading, not wireframing: Illich's learning webs, Gillani on designing for connection over content, and Chetty on networks and mobility drove every decision.

03 · INSIDE STORYBRIDGE

Three views, one story.

The same story flows through three roles — a high-schooler authors it, a K-8 student reads it at their level, and a teacher keeps it safe. Reader library, author dashboard, and admin moderation queue, all running in the working prototype.

04 · WHAT I LEARNED

Real kids on both ends. AI just carries it across.

Every interview pointed the same way: the magic is that real students write for real students — AI is only the bridge, never the author. Teachers trusted the idea but wanted to see exactly how moderation works and to override it; reading-level adaptation only earns trust with a human reviewing first. And it only lives if it's woven into the classroom, not bolted on.

Built from the team's ARTG 5000 (Designing AI for Education) final project — Jahnavi, Anna, Rachel & Cesar — plus a working prototype. It's a research-driven project: the ideation was the reading, not wireframing. The through-line — AI adapts the reading level, it never rewrites the author's story.
