What Data Needs: Artists in the Age of Algorithms

Janet Echelman's Remembering the Future hangs 20,000 years of climate data over the MIT Museum lobby. In an era of dashboards that produce numbness rather than understanding, her practice offers a counter-model: not better data visualization, but a different architecture of engagement.

Your chin tilts up the moment you enter the MIT Museum lobby, where Janet Echelman's Remembering the Future hangs suspended overhead, part of a three-year residency at MIT's Center for Art, Science & Technology. Your neck cranes, held in an uncomfortable position, trying to grasp the work. The sculpture commands attention before the front desk, before the gift shop. It grabs you through the lobby windows, even before you step inside, visible from the entrance to the Red Line at Kendall/MIT.

But why MIT? Why commission an artist to interpret climate data at a world-leading research institution? CAST exists at the intersection of those three worlds. It brings artists into collaboration with the Institute's labs and research, embedding creative work into the scientific and technological infrastructure. Echelman's sculpture is exactly the kind of unexpected partnership CAST seeks: an artist working directly with oceanographic data from MIT's Raffaele Ferrari and climate projections from the En-ROADS simulator, a policy simulation model that lets users explore the impact of different climate solutions.

The wall text reveals that each fiber carries decades of climate data, from the past to the future. Echelman presents data in ways that break with how we typically encounter it, but she's clear about what this isn't. Look up. A single yellow rope, thin as a pencil's lead, runs taut between massive fiber clusters, the only line without a massive cluster dangling beneath it. This is the line of highest tension. This is what Echelman chose not to hide.

Thousands of fibers are bundled into massive clusters, blues and greens below, yellows and oranges rising overhead. As you move around the lobby, the structure reorganizes itself. The yellow cord runs horizontally through it all, the only element under pure tension with nothing dangling beneath it. Nothing is hidden.

This practice exposes a fundamental gap: we have more data than ever, but diminishing capacity to feel its significance. Echelman's work reveals what artists do. They don't decorate data; they create space to feel what it means. That yellow cord, present, taut, suspended overhead, is the moment we're all living in.

Drowning in Data

This gap Echelman exposes, between data abundance and our capacity to feel it, isn't unique to climate science. That was the condition of living in 2025, the year her sculpture premiered. Today, that sense of being overwhelmed by data has only intensified. Your smartphone collects thousands of data points daily: location tracking, screen time, biometric patterns, and search history. But here's the thing: no human at Meta or Google is reading your individual data. Algorithms automatically sort through anonymized data in large-scale data centers. All automated. All algorithmic. No human eyes.

This produces a cycle we are all familiar with. Your data flows in, where you click, what you watch, and how long you linger. Algorithms detect patterns in that behavior. Then on your "For You Page," you receive feeds precisely calculated to keep you scrolling. We're drowning in information processed by machines that optimize for patterns, not for feeling. Climate dashboards show rising CO2 levels, heat maps show projected temperature increases, and projections model sea level rise. All clarity, no capacity to respond. The more data we have, the more we are rendered immobile. This is what Echelman means when she talks about "shock and paralysis," data presented so clinically that it produces numbness rather than understanding.

Algorithms treat data like a problem to solve, compressing it, simplifying it, and packaging it into digestible visualizations. Echelman treats data like tensile architecture. She lets the weight of climate history hang heavy in space, letting fiber tension reveal the stress points. The structure holds itself. The future dangles overhead, visible but untouchable.

The Yellow Cord

The wall text describes the sculpture as "a single rope, held taut between the world as it has been and the world as it could be." Look closer at that yellow line, the only line without a massive cluster dangling beneath it. That's us. The present. But here's what the museum doesn't emphasize: the yellow cord carries the highest tension. "How much tension is there in this moment," Echelman told me during a Zoom conversation in November 2025. "How much do the choices we make now matter?" While algorithms flatten the present into another data point to process, Echelman makes you feel its structural weight.

The sculpture spans 20,000 years, oceanography research from MIT's Raffaele Ferrari, and climate projections from the En-ROADS simulator. Blues and greens cluster around eye level and below, cooler temperatures stretching back to the ice age. But look up. Reds and oranges converge at the center of the structure. The edges still hold blues and greens, but watch what happens as each fiber travels inward; the color shifts. Not instantly. Gradually. Blue to green to yellow to orange to red. That gradual transition is what gives you hope. The warming isn't instantaneous. There's a distance between where we've been and where we're headed. But here's the thing: without intervention, that distance shrinks. The fibers don't accelerate on their own, but our inaction does.

Suspended Meaning

When Echelman talks about working with corporations like Nike or speaking at industry conferences, she explains why they bring an artist into rooms full of data scientists and engineers: "I don't want to feel disempowered." She's not defending herself; she's diagnosing what happens when data is stripped of feeling. Even companies drowning in their own data recognize what's missing. They have the algorithms, the computational power, the dashboards. What they don't have is the capacity to make anyone care.

This is what Echelman offers as a counter-model in the age of AI, not better data visualization, but an entirely different architecture of engagement. Where AI optimizes for extraction and efficiency, Echelman's methodology privileges connection, scale, and embodied perception.

The sculpture required extensive computational design software to calculate how 300+ segments would hold tension in three-dimensional space through collaboration with MIT engineers. But here's the contradiction: despite these algorithmic calculations, Echelman chose a year-long hand-splicing process for every piece of twine. The point isn't optimization, it's revealing a connection. Algorithms map the structure. Hands make the meaning.

At the MIT Museum, visitors can interact with a digital twin of the sculpture on a touchscreen in the lobby, manipulating rope structures, adjusting parameters, and exploring the design process. This isn't passive viewing; it's participatory sense-making. You're not told what the patterns mean. You discover them. This is what "I don't want to feel disempowered" looks like in practice: creating conditions for understanding rather than delivering conclusions.

The Space Where Feeling Happens

We're living in the yellow cord. The moment of highest tension, where the choices we make now matter most. AI systems flood us with processed information, pattern recognition at scale, optimization algorithms determining significance, and predictive models telling you what the data means. The problem isn't that we lack data. It's that we've inherited modes of engagement from algorithmic culture that mistake clarity for comprehension, information for understanding.

Echelman's work reveals what we're missing: the pleasure of making meaning ourselves. Not because we should abandon algorithms or data visualization, but because we need both. Echelman does something data can't. She makes the future approachable. She's projecting, not predicting, a distinction Sarah Housley explores in her book Designing Hope. When was the last time you heard someone express excitement about the 22nd century? Fear has replaced anticipation. And fear produces paralysis, the exact condition her work undoes.

The sculpture moves with the wind. It changes with light. No day looks the same. Blues cluster below, reds burn overhead, and that gradual transition, blue to green to yellow to orange to red, gives you something a climate dashboard never could: hope grounded in your own observation. You're not told the planet is warming. You notice the red creeping in. You feel it.

This is what we need as algorithmic life intensifies. Not a rejection of data, but an expansion of how we engage with it. Not simpler visualizations, but richer conditions for sense-making. We need artists who understand that the point isn't delivering information efficiently; it's building scaffolding for contemplation, discovery, and agency.

I don't want to suggest Echelman has solved climate change by suspending it overhead in fiber. But she's done something more urgent. She's created a model for how we might actually feel our way toward action, rather than scrolling past another dashboard into numbness. The fibers don't accelerate on their own. Neither does our capacity to respond. Both require the conditions to engage, not just to know, but to discover. Stand in that lobby long enough, neck craned at an uncomfortable angle, and you'll understand what algorithms can't compute. The gap between paralysis and agency is the space where feeling happens. That space? It's the yellow cord we're all living in. Echelman just made it visible.
